A field trip to several
interesting historical sites is scheduled for Wednesday, February
28, 2007. This trip promises to be especially entertaining and
educational to those of us who appreciate the rich history of our
region. The trip will be video taped for a later broadcast on
local cable channels in the A-K Valley, Armstrong County, Penn
Hills, Greensburg and Pittsburgh.
Tour arrangements are by Thomas Tours and video
production will be by AKLC Studios.

8:45 AM Departure from New Kensington
Giant Eagle lot
9:30 AM Senator John Heinz History
Center. Guided tours of the
First Ladies Exhibit and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum
12:00 N Leave for Homestead - Lunch and
tour at the Bulgarian Macedonian National Educational Center
(featuring salad, soup, bread, dessert, all with recipes native to
Bulgaria)
2:00 PM Steel Industry Heritage Center –
See which artifacts from the era of Big Steel in the Mon Valley
were able to be saved (Blast Furnace, Pump House, the Bost
Building) as the great Homestead Works was demolished and replaced
by stores, restaurants, offices and apartments. Hear the story of
the Strike of 1892, on the site where it actually happened.
4:00 PM Leave Homestead
5:00 PM AKVHS Heritage Museum in Tarentum
-Tour the Museum and also learn about the
Mosaic of Industry Tour of the A-K Valley. This tour will
begin later this year and will tell the
story of the materials produced here (Coal, Salt, Aluminum, Glass
and Steel) and the people who produced them.
6:00 PM Return to New Kensington Giant
Eagle lot
The entire tour will be video taped and edited
by AKLC Studios for broadcasting
on the local cable channel in late March.
